Waste Collection Fire and Disposal of Batteries

On Wednesday, 7th August, one of Biffa’s waste collection vehicles was subject to an onboard fire, caused by a damaged lithium power pack battery.

Luckily, nobody was hurt during the incident & the crew and fire service reacted quickly. We kindly remind residents that household batteries should be placed in a carrier bag and on/next to the bin so they can be collected separately from general waste.

In May 2024, the National Fire Chiefs Council published an article on their website, which stated that battery fires in bin lorries and at waste sites reached an all-time high last year, with over 1200 incidents (a 71% increase from 2022).
