An improved bus service launched this week will help local people in Bexhill and beyond – and provide a boost to the economy.
Rother District Council says Stagecoach service 98, which runs between Eastbourne and Hastings and includes stops at Sidley, Bexhill and Pebsham, has been upgraded with additional services including extra evening buses between Sidley and Hastings.
The Council says the additional buses provide more travel choices for residents and visitors and boosts employment opportunities in the area.
Councillor Christine Bayliss, Rother Deputy Leader and Lead Cllr for Regeneration and Economic Development said: “This is really good news for people and businesses in Bexhill and other areas.
“We have campaigned for evening bus services to and from Sidley/Pebsham and the town centre as a way of opening up employment opportunities in Bexhill’s night-time economy – as well as improving evening access to local business and the De La Warr Pavilion for Bexhill and Hastings residents who don’t own a car.
“I am incredibly pleased that a new service that meets these needs has been launched this week.”
Stagecoach South East Managing Director, Joel Mitchell, added: “We’re excited about this enhancement to the 98 service, along with a range of fares reductions available for people using the bus.
“Partnership working such as this, between local authorities and bus operators, backed-up with central government funding, will help secure the long-term sustainability of bus services.
“This is an investment in the future of the community; creating connections, helping reduce traffic congestion and boosting the local economy.
“We’re committed to continuing to work closely with our local government partners to sustain these initiatives, and we hope it will encourage more people to use the bus.”
Funding for the upgraded service comes from East Sussex County Council following its successful bid for UK Government funding for its Bus Service Improvement Plan.
