Rother District Council’s Community Grant Scheme supports the development of community facilities, community activities and sustainable local action. 

A total of 14 local organisations and good causes were awarded Community Grants in the 2023/24 financial year: 

Small Grants

Grant Awarded: £186 

Disabled access ramp: The grant was used towards the purchase and installation of an adjustable disabled access ramp. This followed the Club’s previous project of installing an accessible toilet and baby-changing facility. 

Reduce, Reuse, Recycle Grants

Grant Awarded: £364 

Brush cutter: The grant was used towards the purchase of a power brush cutter / strimmer. Previously, volunteers had completed maintenance using hand sheers, so this piece of equipment has become a useful asset to the group. 

Grant Awarded: £256 

Community Composting Education and Awareness Project: The grant was used towards the purchase of equipment needed and to hire venues to run their new project ‘Community Composting Education and Awareness’. This project saw them present a total of 25 talks and workshops on composting. 

Grant Awarded: £1,000 

Water Saving System: The grant was used towards the purchase of a water retention system to collect and store rainwater. This is essential to their ‘No Dig Market Garden’ at Hoads Wood, Fairlight. 

Grant Awarded: £453 

Gardening Club: The grant was used towards the purchase of equipment and materials needed for the group to create their garden space, supporting the launch of the Studio’s new Gardening Club. 

Medium and Large Grants

Grant Awarded: £3,400. 

Physical Play Equipment Project: The grant was used towards the purchase of new physical play equipment for both indoor and outdoor use. 

Grant Awarded: £4,948.78 

The Collective Garden: The grant was used to set up The Collective Garden in Sidley. This includes erecting sheds, setting up rainwater collection systems and purchasing tools and equipment. 

Grant Awarded: £2,656.75 

Restoration of Normans Bay K6 telephone box: The grant was used to restore the old red K6 telephone box on Normans Bay Road and convert it into a community book exchange. An interpretation board detailing the history of the telephone box was also installed. 

Grant Awarded: £10,000 

Bexhill Beach Garden Project: The grant was used to fund Phase 1 of the Bexhill Beach Garden Project; providing accessibility to the beach at West Parade to view the pebble mural created by residents and a Lilypad Garden. 

Grant Awarded: £19,250 

Tennis Court and MUGA Project: The grant was used to fund the conversion of one of the tennis courts at Crowhurst Recreation Ground into a Multi-Use Games Area (MUGA), increasing the provision of different sports to be played at the site.  

Grant Awarded: £3,000 

Winchelsea Beach Bus Stop Improvements: The grant was used towards the purchase of a new bus shelter and the associated installation costs on Sea Road, Winchelsea Beach, within a wider scheme to widen the footway and improve accessibility to those who travel by bus. 

Grant Awarded: £30,000 

New Minibus with Accessible Ramp: The grant was used to purchase a new minibus and accessible wheelchair ramp, replacing the existing, inefficient, and ageing bus that was in use. 

Grant Awarded: £6,550 

Toilets Refurbishment Project: The grant was used to refurbish the Village Hall toilets, making them more efficient and modern.  

Grant Awarded: £3,802 

Toilets Refurbishment Project: The grant was used towards the associated costs of reconstructing and repairing the interior of the female WCs to provide new facilities.
