What do I need to do if I experience problems?

If you cannot get into the payments page this may be because your browser does not support 128-bit encryption. Anything less than this is not considered safe and you should make alternative arrangements for payment (you may still make payment by Telephone and by Post).

If you have waited for confirmation that your payment has been accepted and you have not received anything and/or you have received an error message, your authorisation may have experienced technical problems. Please wait five minutes and try again. If the problem persists please contact 01424 787000 supplying your reference number and the date/time of your problem.

Direct Debit

Direct Debit is a safe, convenient and inexpensive way to pay Council Tax and is widely used by the taxpayers of Rother District.  Payment by this method gives no worries about remembering to pay at the right time, does not involve queuing at a bank, building society or post office counter, and does not involve the writing out and posting of cheques.

There is also the safety of the Direct Debit guarantee:

  • If the amounts to be paid or the payment date change, you will be told of this in advance by at least 14 days, as agreed.
  • If an error is made by Rother District Council or your Bank or Building Society, you are guaranteed a full and immediate refund from your branch of the amount paid.
  • You can cancel the Direct Debit at any time by writing to your Bank or Building Society. Please also send a copy of your letter to Rother District Council.

This Guarantee is offered by all Banks and Building Societies that take part in the Direct Debit Scheme. The efficiency and security of the Scheme is monitored and protected by your own Bank or Building Society.

If you wish to pay by Direct Debit you can set this up online. You will be asked to indicate your preferred date of payment from a list of options that are available to you. Please note: you will need your Council Tax or Business Rates reference number.

By Council Tax Payment Card

An electronic Council Tax Payment Card can be sent to all new customers on request to the Council tax office on 01424 787730. The plastic card can be used to make payments free of charge at any Post Office or other retail outlet (e.g. shops and petrol stations) displaying the PayPoint, PAYzone or e-pay signs. A list of outlets can be found at http://www.allpay.net/outlets. Many of these outlets are open for long hours during the week and at weekends making it easier for many residents to pay their Council Tax. The card will remain usable year after year while the customer lives at the same address. In most cases, even if the person changes address within Rother District, they will still be able to use the same card, as their account reference number will remain the same. The card should be kept in a safe place in the plastic wallet supplied with it, but if it is lost, stolen or damaged, a replacement can be ordered by contacting the Council Tax office on the number above.

By Post

Postal payments should be sent to:

Rother District Council, PO Box 60, Bexhill on Sea, East Sussex. TN39 3ZF

Cheques or postal orders should be made payable to: Rother District Council

Please enclose a payment slip and write the reference or account number on the reverse of your cheque. Payment slips for Council Tax were replaced by electronic Council Tax Payment Cards in December 2006 (see above). It is now essential that the account number and your name and address are written on the back of any cheques sent by post. Failure to do this may lead to a payment not being allocated to the correct Council Tax account. Do not enclose the Payment Card with your payment.

Please do not send cash.

A receipt will only be issued if you send a stamped addressed envelope with your payment.
