District council backs spring clean campaign

District council backs spring clean campaign

Residents and volunteer groups wanting to give their local community a spring clean will have the full backing of Rother District Council.

The local authority is encouraging people to take part in the Great British Spring Clean, a campaign led by Keep Britain Tidy.

With the support of the waste collections and street cleansing contractor, Rother will provide litter sacks and arrange collection of full litter sacks once the litter picking has been completed.

The aim is to get local volunteers involved in a community-wide litter campaign to clean up their local environment by collecting litter from streets and public spaces between March 22 and April 23.

Cllr Ian Hollidge, Rother District Council's portfolio holder for the environment, said: "Litter blights our streets, parks and beaches and costs the taxpayers a significant amount of money each year to clear up.

"By getting involved in the Great British Spring Clean, we can make a huge difference to our local environment and send out a message that litter pollution will not be tolerated in our district."

He added: "We should be proud of the places we live and work and celebrate our public spaces, and I am delighted that Rother District Council can play its part in supporting members of the public to take action."

The district council will provide green sacks to people who have registered to take part in the campaign, and will arrange collection of filled green sacks from agreed locations.

Groups can sign up to clean a particular area or individuals can pledge their support and commit to collecting litter as part of their daily routine; when they are walking the dog or on the school run.

Residents are warned not to litter pick dangerous areas, such as land next to main roads, or collect dangerous items such as needles and glass, to only collect litter from public land and to report fly tips rather than clean them.
