Register now for Bexhill by-elections

People have less than a week to register to vote for two by-elections being held in an area of Bexhill.

Polls for election to Rother District Council's Bexhill St Marks ward and East Sussex County Council's Bexhill West division will be held on Thursday, January 10 2019.

The two seats were left vacant following the death in October of Cllr Stuart Earl, who was a district and county council member.

The deadline to register to vote for anyone not currently on the electoral register is Wednesday, December 19 2018, while the deadline to apply to vote by post is Thursday, December 20 2018 at 5pm.

For people already on the electoral register living in that area of Bexhill, polling cards have been sent out this week, while postal vote ballot papers will be sent out on Thursday, December 27 2018.

Malcolm Johnston, returning officer for the district council election and deputy returning officer for the county council election, said: "Christmas is obviously a busy time for post so I'd urge people to keep an eye out for their polling card in the mail.

"It's important that anyone who is not currently registered to vote, or would like to vote by post but has not yet applied to do so, gets in touch us by the relevant deadline to ensure they don't miss out.

"By taking part in the by-election you will be choosing who represents you and your community on the district and county councils in the years to come."

People can register to vote online at www.gov.uk/register-to-vote or for any questions email elections@rother.gov.uk or call the customer services team on 01424 787000.
