Budding basketball players can now shoot hoops at Little Common Recreation Ground thanks to the arrival of new equipment.

Two basketball goals have been installed by Rother District Council on a disused hard standing area following a request from a young person living in Little Common.

The resident asked if the council could improve facilities to enable him and his friends to get out in the fresh air, play basketball and get some exercise. Previously the only option was to travel across town and across busy roads to play.

Funding to enable the project to happen has been helped by a generous donation from the Rotary Club of Senlac, to support money provided from the council's sports development and parks budget

Cllr Jim Carroll, Rother District Council's cabinet member for young people, sport and leisure, said: "I'm delighted that we have been able to act on the young person's request and add basketball goals to improve the popular recreation ground.

"I am extremely grateful to the late Cllr Stuart Earl, the local councillor to the area, who not only backed the plans but secured a donation from the local Rotary Club to make the project possible."

He added: "Taking part in sport has huge benefits for physical and mental health and wellbeing. I hope the new basketball court will prove popular and encourage more people in the area to get active."

The district council is committed to promoting active and healthy lifestyle developing facilities and encouraging participation in physical activities where it can, and improving public spaces and encourage residents to use them.
