Consultation will seek views on Bexhill's future

Views on options for how Bexhill could be governed in the future will be sought when a consultation launches next week.

Members of the public, local business owners and organisations will be asked to choose their preferred option from a shortlist agreed by the district council, based on feedback from an initial consultation which took place earlier this year.

The four options put forward for the six-week consultation, which starts on Friday, September 1, include;

  • No change with Bexhill continuing to be governed by the district council only

  • The creation of one parish council, to be styled as a town council, for the whole of Bexhill. This would be in addition to the district council

  • The creation of a Bexhill Area Committee comprising the 18 Bexhill district ward councillors. The area committee would be consulted on decision making, but would not have executive decision making powers

  • The creation of four parish councils for Bexhill - one for each of the East Sussex County Council's divisional boundaries. This would be in addition to the district council

Robin Patten, independent chairman of the review's steering group said: "We want to hear from as many people as possible, including those who haven't taken part in the first phase of the consultation. Residents will play a vital role in the second phase by giving their views on the options.

"In order to keep costs to a minimum, we are encouraging those that can respond online to do so. For those who can't, information and response postcards are available from the Council's Community Help Point in Bexhill or by contacting their local councillor.

He added: "As well as being effective and providing value for money, any arrangements which are introduced must represent the identity and the interests of people in Bexhill."

As well as information on the review and options available on the district council's website, a number of community events will take place during the consultation period to enable residents to speak to local councillors and find out more information and how to respond to the consultation.

Representatives of the district council will be available to give information and answer questions at the following events in Bexhill;

  • Saturday, September 2 at Promenade / Colonnade, between 10am and 2pm (weather dependent)

  • Saturday, September 9 at Sainsbury's in Buckhurst Place, between 10am and 2pm

  • Saturday, September 16 at Devonshire Square, between 10am and 2pm (weather dependent)

  • Saturday, September 23 at the De La Warr Pavilion, between 11am and 3pm

  • Saturday, September 30 at Bexhill Leisure Centre, between 10am and 2pm

The Steering Group will consider the outcome of the consultation at the end of October and the Overview Scrutiny Committee will the make final recommendations to Cabinet and Council by the end of the year. Full Council is expected to agree an outcome to the review at its meeting in December.
