We can investigate where artificial light is entering a property or garden and making the property brighter in such a way that prevents normal living or forces a change in behaviour.
Before reporting a light nuisance to us we recommend speaking to the person causing it as they may not be aware of the issue.
If this is not successful or where individuals are not approachable, think about writing to them and if this does not work, then why not try contacting the Mediation Plus, the free mediation service we partner with, who can assist you in communicating with your neighbour. Before contacting them please read the Mediation Plus privacy policy.
We recommend phoning them on 01424 446 808 to discuss their services before you report the problem to us.
If you are experiencing problems from your neighbour and either of you are privately renting or social housing tenants, the issue should be reported to your landlord first.
You can also take your own action through the magistrate’s court.
For complaints about street lights please contact East Sussex Highways.
For complaints about illuminated shop signs please contact Customer Services on 01424 787000 and ask for our Planning Enforcement team.
Please use the reporting form to see what we can help with and for advice on who else can help. Please note, anonymous complaints cannot be processed.
When submitting your complaint please provide an accurate address or location of where the problem is coming from. That will enable us to assess and investigate your complaint and if needed, contact the person responsible for the issue.
If you are unsure of the address/ location of the problem, then please undertake further investigations before registering your complaint. Please do not use your own address as the source of the problem because we cannot accept your complaint. Unfortunately, Environmental Health is unable to help trace the source of an issue.
