Question 15/16

Q. Is there a limit to the number of years a councillor can serve on the same committee, and is there a limit to the number of years a chairman can lead the same committee? (31/05/2016)

A. There is no limit to the number of years a Councillor can serve on the same committee and there is no limit to the number of years a Member can be chairman of the same committee.  Committee Chairmen are elected by the Committee Members appointed to each committee at the first meeting in each municipal year, this usually takes place on the same evening as the Annual Council Meeting in May each year.

For committees such as the regulatory committees, Licensing and Planning, this provides for continuity of decision making and allows the Councillors to build up a good knowledge base through mandatory annual and on-going training; this enables Councillors to make decisions based on relevant licensing and planning regulations, as advised by the professional officers.
