Question 13/16

Q. Councillor Maurice Watson has transferred to the Conservative party. Please can you advise whether he was elected by the Sidley constituents in May 2015 for his personality or his politics. I assume it was for the latter and therefore when can we expect another election for the Sidley ward? Thank you. (19/05/2016)

A. There have been a number of occasions when councillors have "crossed the floor" to different parties during my time on this council; and in each case the councillors continued to represent their constituents without resigning and holding the necessary by election. Maurice is a hard working councillor and he has decided to carry on until his term of office expires in May 2019. It has to be borne in mind that there are costs involved with holding a by election and it is his decision to carry on. I am sure he will continue to work hard for all his constituents regardless of the party which they support just as all Rother councillors have always done. (19/05/2016)
